As I prepare for my upcoming trip to Rome, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement and anticipation. Inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat Pray Love,” I am ready to embark on my journey of self-discovery, indulgence, and spiritual exploration in this ancient and vibrant city. Rome promises to be an unforgettable destination with its rich history, breathtaking architecture, and mouthwatering cuisine.

I will be visiting the iconic Castel Sant’Angelo, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian. Throughout history, it has served as a fortress, a papal residence, and a prison. Today, it is a museum offering stunning panoramic views of Rome from its rooftop terrace. In “Eat Pray Love,” Elizabeth visits Castel Sant’Angelo, marvelling at its grandeur and contemplating life’s more profound questions. I am excited to experience the awe-inspiring feeling of standing in the same place. I look forward to feeling the weight of history and embracing the beauty of the Eternal City.

Via dei Portoghesi is another must-visit spot on my itinerary. This charming street is known for its narrow, winding alleys, picturesque buildings, and vibrant atmosphere. As I stroll along Via dei Portoghesi, I hope to immerse myself in the daily life of Romans, savouring the sights, sounds, and smells of this bustling neighbourhood. It’s a place where past and present blend seamlessly, offering an authentic taste of Roman life.It was here where Gilbert stayed in Rome, at the apartment located at 18 Via Dei Portoghesi.

Food plays a significant role in “Eat Pray Love,” and I am eager to indulge in the culinary delights of Rome. I can’t wait to visit Ristorante Caffè Domiziano at Piazza Navona. Its beautiful Baroque architecture and lively atmosphere make it the perfect place to start the day with a delicious coffee and a sweet treat. I am looking forward to practising my Italian with the barista and enjoying coffee and pastry at the bar.

Speaking of Piazza Navona, the Fiumi Fountain is another highlight of my trip. Designed by the renowned artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, this magnificent fountain represents the four major rivers of the world: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Rio de la Plata. In “Eat, Pray, Love,” Elizabeth finds solace and inspiration at the Fontana di Trevi. I hope to experience a similar sense of wonder and tranquillity as I gaze upon its intricate sculptures and listen to the soothing sound of flowing water.

Nearby, the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The church was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to Saint Agnes, a young Roman martyr. Its stunning facade and ornate interior are a testament to the artistic and architectural brilliance of the Baroque period. As I step inside, I will take a moment to reflect on Saint Agnes’s spiritual journey and the enduring power of faith. It was outside this church where Elizabeth Gilbert sat on the bench to enjoy the gelato with the nuns.

When in Rome, a visit to the Colosseum is a must. This ancient amphitheatre, which was once the site of gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, represents the grandeur of Rome’s imperial past. As I walk through its massive arches and stand in the arena, I am transported back in time, imagining the roar of the crowds and the bravery of the gladiators who fought for their lives. The Colosseum serves as a reminder of Rome’s lasting legacy and the resilience of its people.

For a delightful evening dining experience, I will visit Antica Trattoria Della Pace, a cozy restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of Rome. This trattoria is known for its authentic Italian cuisine and warm hospitality, offering a perfect setting for a leisurely meal. I will savour each dish, from freshly made pasta to decadent tiramisu, and toast to the joys of travel and discovery. It was at this place where Elizabeth had dinner with her Italian teacher and where she first heard her favourite Italian word: “Attraversiamo.”

I can’t wait to visit the Mausoleum of Augustus, which holds immense historical significance as the final resting place of Rome’s first emperor, Augustus. This iconic site marks where Augustus, the transformative figure who shaped Roman history, now rests. Standing before his tomb, I’ll reflect on Augustus’s legacy and his profound impact on shaping the course of Roman history.

In “Eat Pray Love,” Elizabeth Gilbert’s journey in Rome involves indulgence, self-reflection, and spiritual awakening. I look forward to embracing these experiences as I prepare for my adventure. From the grandeur of Castel Sant’Angelo to the charming streets of Via dei Portoghesi, from the culinary delights of Ristorante Caffè Domiziano to the historical wonders of the Colosseum and the Mausoleum of Augustus, each moment promises to be a step towards a deeper connection with myself and the world around me.

Rome is one of my favourite cities in the world because of its timeless beauty and rich cultural heritage. I am ready to immerse myself in history, savour the flavours, and find inspiration in the art and architecture of this magnificent city. As I walk in Elizabeth Gilbert’s footsteps, I hope to discover new perspectives, forge lasting memories, and return home with a heart full of love and gratitude.
