Exploring Highclere: From Downton Abbey to Tutankhamun

    by Bronwyn 9 July 2024
    written by Bronwyn

I can’t wait for my upcoming visit to Highclere Castle. This historic estate in the beautiful Hampshire countryside is full of stories and charm, and I’m excited to explore its rich British heritage.

Highclere Castle has been home to many notable figures over the years, especially the Earls of Carnarvon. Known for their wealth, influence, and interesting connections, they have made a lasting impact on the estate and British society. One particularly famous figure, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, gained international renown for his collaboration with Howard Carter in discovering the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt. This connection adds an intriguing layer to the castle’s history.

Highclere Castle’s connections to Egypt are particularly fascinating. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s passion for archaeology led him to sponsor the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, alongside archaeologist Howard Carter. This remarkable discovery, considered one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century, propelled Highclere Castle to global fame. The artifacts brought back from Egypt, including treasures from the tomb, are displayed within the castle, giving visitors a unique insight into ancient Egyptian history.

The castle is truly an architectural gem, with its stunning grounds landscaped by the legendary Capability Brown. As I stroll through its gardens, I am transported back to a time of grandeur and elegance, imagining the parties and gatherings that once graced these grounds.

Another highlight I’m eager to explore is Highclere’s association with “Downton Abbey,” the beloved television series that brought the estate to worldwide attention. Portraying life upstairs and downstairs, the show captured the imagination of millions, showcasing the castle’s splendor and its fictional inhabitants, the Crawley family.

Of course, I can’t wait to learn more about Porchie, the 6th Earl of Carnarvon. His role as a close confidant of Queen Elizabeth II adds a modern twist to Highclere’s historical tapestry. His influence and the castle’s enduring connection with royalty provide a glimpse into a bygone era of aristocratic life.

As I prepare for my visit, I often find myself daydreaming about walking the halls where kings and queens once strolled, imagining the conversations that echoed through its lavish rooms. From the grandeur of the library to the intimacy of the bedrooms, every corner of Highclere Castle promises to unveil secrets and stories that have shaped its illustrious past.

Exploring Highclere Castle isn’t just about stepping into history. It’s about experiencing a place where the past and present converge. It’s about understanding the lives of those who shaped its legacy and appreciating the beauty that surrounds it. Whether I’m marveling at the Egyptian artifacts or admiring the architectural splendor, I know this visit will be a journey through time—a chance to immerse myself in the rich history and captivating tales that define Highclere Castle.

“I've come to believe that there exists in the universe something I call "The Physics of The Quest" — a force of nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity or momentum. And the rule of Quest Physics maybe goes like this: "If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself... then truth will not be withheld from you." Or so I've come to believe.”
