Storytelling Intentions: Capturing My Travel Journey

    by Bronwyn 30 June 2024
    written by Bronwyn

As I get ready for my upcoming adventures, I am establishing clear intentions for how I want to capture and share my experiences. This is the first part of a series of posts outlining my storytelling intentions, which will cover everything from technology and photography to collecting ephemera.

I’m excited to document my everyday experiences in a way that truly reflects my journey. I’ll be using my trusty Four Thirds Camera, Tough Camera, and iPhone to snap photos and then use my tech to share my adventures with my family and friends. Whenever I travel or work on memory-keeping projects, I find that I tend to take more photos with the camera that’s easiest to use or within reach. I hope that my photos, along with my stories and reflections, will help my family and friends understand why certain places and events are so special to me.

    Capturing the Moment

This trip is like a dream come true for me! I’ve been researching and chatting with my family and friends about the places I’ll be visiting for years. Through storytelling, I hope to capture the true essence of my travels so that I can always remember how I felt and what I saw in those moments. This will help me cherish these memories and combine them with my long-term reflections in my scrapbooks that I will complete later. Here’s what I really want to focus on:

    Spending Time with My Sister

I can’t wait to spend time with my sister on this trip! I’m so excited to visit her house in Carlisle for the first time and explore the beautiful area where she lives. We’ll get to spend time together in Scotland, the Lake District, and Yorkshire, and I can’t wait to capture all these special moments with my sister!

    Stories of Transportation

I plan to document my transportation experiences, whether it’s the thrill of taking a high-speed train, the scenic beauty from a bus window, or the charm of a local ferry. These stories often provide a unique perspective on a place and its people.

    Capturing Voices of Others

Engaging with locals and fellow travelers is such an important part of my journey that I’m really looking forward to it. I want to capture the voices and stories of those I meet along the way. Part of what I’m truly looking forward to is staying in youth hostels, where I anticipate having conversations with fellow travelers in the common rooms. I’m also planning to do some small tours and I can’t wait to connect with others who share my passion for the same places and histories. The insights and experiences of those I will meet will surely add depth and richness to my travel stories, and I am so grateful for that.

    Exploring Places with the Senses

To truly capture the essence of a place, I will explore it with all my senses—smell, taste, sound, touch, and sight. From the aroma of street food to the sound of bustling markets, these sensory details will bring my stories to life.

    Themes and Reflections

I will also focus on broader themes and personal reflections:

Themes of the Day, Week, or Country

Each day, week, or country often has a distinct theme or mood. I will identify and document these themes to provide a structured narrative that highlights the unique characteristics of each part of my journey.

    Stories I Am Telling Myself

Travel is as much about internal journeys as it is about external ones. I will reflect on the stories I am telling myself, the lessons I am learning, and the personal growth I am experiencing.

    Favourite Times of the Day

Certain moments stand out more than others—like a peaceful sunrise, a bustling afternoon market, or a quiet evening stroll. I will highlight these favorite times of the day to capture the rhythm and beauty of daily life in different places.

    Adding Context and Wonder

To add further context and wonder to my storytelling, I will include:

    Things That Are Inspiring Wonder

I will document the things that inspire awe and wonder during my travels, whether it’s a stunning natural landscape, an intricate piece of art, or a moment of human kindness.

    Travel by Numbers

Numbers often tell a compelling story. I will include statistics and figures—like the number of steps walked, miles traveled, or new foods tried—to provide a quantitative dimension to my experiences.

    Culture Clash Stories

Navigating different cultures can lead to interesting and sometimes humorous situations. I will share stories of culture clashes and how they enriched my travel experience.

    Living My Bucket List

Finally, I will share how I am living out my bucket list. From iconic landmarks to once-in-a-lifetime experiences, I want to capture the joy and fulfillment of ticking off these dreams.

In subsequent posts, I will delve into my storytelling intentions with apps and technology, photography using my micro 4/3 camera, tough camera, and mobile camera, and collecting ephemera. Together, these tools will help me create a rich and detailed tapestry of my travels. I also plan on revisiting one of my favourite Travel Memory Keeping books, Globejotting and it will be interesting if this might change some of my goals.

Stay tuned as I embark on this storytelling journey, capturing and sharing the moments that make travel so meaningful.

“I've come to believe that there exists in the universe something I call "The Physics of The Quest" — a force of nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity or momentum. And the rule of Quest Physics maybe goes like this: "If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself... then truth will not be withheld from you." Or so I've come to believe.”
