Amalfi Dreaming: Vespas, Limoncello, and the Magic of Positano

    by Bronwyn 5 July 2024
    written by Bronwyn

I’m really excited about my upcoming trip to Positano. Ever since I watched the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun,” I’ve been dreaming about visiting this beautiful town. The film perfectly depicted the beauty of the Italian coast, and I’ve been eager to experience it firsthand. It’s finally happening, and I’m looking forward to soaking in all the charm and allure of Positano.

I’ll start my journey in Sorrento and plan to rent a Vespa to enjoy the scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast. Riding a Vespa along the winding coastal roads, feeling the sun on my face and the sea breeze in my hair, is undeniably romantic. I’m looking forward to the freedom and excitement of exploring at my own pace, which will be an adventure in itself.

As I approach Positano, I am looking forward to being greeted by its iconic cliffside houses, painted in shades of pastel, cascading down to the azure sea. The town’s stunning beauty is well-known, but I suspect that seeing it in person will be an entirely different experience. I imagine myself winding through the narrow streets, discovering hidden gems around every corner.

One of my first stops will be a gelateria, where I can indulge in some authentic Italian gelato. There’s something about enjoying a cold, creamy treat while basking in the Mediterranean sun that sounds absolutely perfect. With flavors like pistachio, lemon, and chocolate, I know I’ll be spoiled for choice. I can already imagine sitting on a bench, licking my gelato, and taking in the breathtaking views of the sea.

Next on my list is to sample some limoncello, the quintessential Italian lemon liqueur. Positano is famous for its lemons, and I can’t wait to try this local specialty in its birthplace. Whether it’s sipped in a quaint café or enjoyed as an after-dinner treat, limoncello will undoubtedly add a refreshing zing to my Positano experience.

Of course, Positano is not just about food and drink. I’m excited to explore the town’s historic charm and vibrant atmosphere. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its stunning majolica-tiled dome, is a must-see. I’m eager to wander the streets and take in the unique blend of natural beauty and architectural splendor. Every alley and staircase seems to promise a new adventure and a new perspective of this enchanting town.

I’m really looking forward to visiting the beach. Spiaggia Grande, Positano’s main beach, is the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. I can picture myself laying out a towel on the pebbly shore, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin, and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. After exploring the town, I can’t wait to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to cool off.

As the day comes to an end, I imagine myself discovering a comfortable spot in a seaside restaurant, where I can enjoy fresh seafood and pasta dishes while watching the sunset over the horizon. The beautiful colors of the sky, the sound of the waves, and the delightful flavors of Italian cuisine will combine to create a sensory experience that is hard to surpass.

This trip to Positano is more than just a vacation; it’s the fulfillment of a long-held dream. From the moment I watched “Under the Tuscan Sun,” I knew I had to visit this magical place. Now, as I prepare for this adventure, my excitement and anticipation are building with each passing day. I can’t wait to share my experiences and bring back memories that will last a lifetime.

“I've come to believe that there exists in the universe something I call "The Physics of The Quest" — a force of nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity or momentum. And the rule of Quest Physics maybe goes like this: "If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself... then truth will not be withheld from you." Or so I've come to believe.”
