Visiting World War 1 Battlfields – Ypres

    by Bronwyn 2 June 2024
    written by Bronwyn

I am particularly looking forward to visiting Ypres. I was introduced to World War One when Mum was preparing lessons for school and as I grew up it became a shared interest. I believe that there is o much we can learn from World War One.

One of my particular areas of interest for World War One was the Third Battle of Ypres also known as the Battle of Passchendaele (31 July to 10 November 1917). And visiting Ypres first in my Beligum/France journey makes sense both geographically but also in regards to importance.

Mat MacLacklan is a historian and a Battlefield Tour Guide and I hope to get some ideas and tips for where I should visit,

Places that I want to visit that are mentioned here include

    • Ypres Cloth Hall
    • St Martins Cathedral
    • Menin Gate
    • British Grenadier Bookshop – They also do Tours
    • The Ypres Ramparts & Lile Gate
    • Shrapnel Corner

Not Mention but Want to Visit

“I've come to believe that there exists in the universe something I call "The Physics of The Quest" — a force of nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity or momentum. And the rule of Quest Physics maybe goes like this: "If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself... then truth will not be withheld from you." Or so I've come to believe.”
