Contact Lens – Beyond the Black Frames

Over the summer holidays, one of my sisters-in-law suggested that I try contact lenses while we were on the Mid-North Coast. Initially, I was hesitant because I wear multifocal lenses in my glasses and didn’t like the idea of having contact lenses only for distance vision, leaving me unable to read. However, she informed me that multifocal contact lenses now exist. While they may not be suitable for long days at the computer for work, they are perfect for being out and about and needing to read occasionally – just like when I’m traveling

Intrigued, I decided to give it a go. I had never worn contact lenses before or done anything that required touching my eyeball, so this was a bit of an adventure. I booked an appointment at Specsavers for an updated eye assessment to see if my prescription was suitable. Fortunately, it was a breeze, and I passed the first hurdle – my prescription was compatible with multifocal contact lenses.

The next step was to get some samples. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly my prescription came in, and soon, I had lenses to try. I will admit, I was a bit of a dunce at putting them in. The staff at Specsavers were incredibly patient, giving me tips on how to correct my mistakes and improve with each attempt. After a few tries, we managed to get them in and out a couple of times, and they let me go for a walk, do some shopping, and just try them out.

I was really impressed with how well they worked, even in the first 10 minutes. I know it will take some time for my eyes to adjust, like with glasses, but I decided to order more and see how long it would take to get them before my trip..

Currently, I am practicing putting in my contact lenses. Although it takes me a while and I’m not very skilled at it yet, I can see improvements with each attempt. I found that inserting the lens in my left eye first makes it easier to do the right one. For some reason, it’s just so hard not to blink when doing my right eye. I just need more practice.

In the end, I’m so grateful for the suggestion. I think these lenses will be fantastic for my trip, helping me get out from behind my black frames and out into the world – for the most part – glasses-free.
