Scottish Movies That Bring History to Life: My Pre-Trip Playlist

    by Bronwyn 17 July 2024
    written by Bronwyn

As I prepare for my upcoming trip to Scotland, I’ve been immersing myself in movies that are set or filmed in this enchanting country. There’s something magical about seeing stunning Scottish landscapes and historic sites on screen, knowing I’ll soon be walking those grounds. The films on my watchlist are “Local Hero,” “Braveheart,” “Mary Queen of Scots” (2018), and “The Outlaw King.” These films offer a cinematic journey through Scotland’s rich history and breathtaking scenery, setting the stage for my adventure.

    Local Hero (1983)

Out of all these films, “Local Hero” holds a special place in my heart. It’s a movie that I grew up with and that everyone in my family cherished. Both of my parents had visited the filming locations and would often reminisce about their trips, which made the film even more special to us. The story of a Texas oil executive sent to buy a small Scottish village, only to fall in love with its charm, has always captivated me. The quaint town of Pennan, with its iconic red phone box and the serene beaches featured in the film, are places I’ve long dreamed of visiting. I have “Local Hero” downloaded on my phone and plan to watch it on the plane trip to Scotland, soaking in the nostalgia and excitement.

    Braveheart (1995)

“Braveheart” tells the epic story of William Wallace and Scotland’s struggle for independence. The movie features dramatic battle scenes and breathtaking views of Scotland’s mountains, showcasing the country’s rugged beauty and turbulent history. Although the film’s historical accuracy is a topic of debate, its powerful emotional impact and depiction of Scottish resilience and courage are unquestionable.

    Mary Queen of Scots (2018)

“Mary Queen of Scots” powerfully depicts the life and struggles of one of Scotland’s most famous monarchs. The film’s portrayal of the political intrigue and personal battles faced by Mary Stuart and her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, provides poignant insight into a turbulent period in Scottish history. The stunning castles and landscapes in the film are a visual treat, making me eager to explore the real locations associated with Mary’s life.

    Outlaw King

“The Outlaw King” is a film that vividly portrays Scotland’s indomitable spirit. The movie tells the gripping story of Robert the Bruce’s struggle to win back the Scottish throne from English rule. Filmed in different parts of Scotland, the movie showcases the country’s stunning natural beauty and historical landmarks. As I watch the film, I can’t help but be filled with awe at the landscapes that I will soon experience firsthand.

    Da Vinic Code (2006)

The “Da Vinci Code” has an intriguing connection to Scotland, with important scenes taking place at Rosslyn Chapel. The chapel, situated just outside Edinburgh, plays a crucial role in the mystery revolving around the Holy Grail in both the book and the film. This adds an extra layer of excitement to my visit. I am looking forward to exploring this historic and enigmatic site, admiring its detailed carvings and learning about its fascinating past.

    Outlander (TV Series)

I’m thinking about watching the TV series Outlander for the first time, along with the films mentioned earlier. My mother, who was a big fan of “Outlander”, often encouraged me to watch it before she passed away. The series, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, is known for its stunning Scottish settings and engaging storylines that blend history, romance, and fantasy. I’m still undecided on whether to start the series before my trip or save it for when I return, but I’m sure my mother’s enthusiasm for “Outlander” will eventually win me over.

As my departure date approaches, I am becoming increasingly excited about the opportunity to experience Scotland in both film and reality. These movies and series provide a glimpse into the country’s past and showcase its enduring beauty and cultural richness. Watching them feels like a warm-up to the adventure that awaits, adding to my anticipation and appreciation of what’s to come. Whether it’s the quaint charm of “Local Hero”, the epic battles of “Braveheart”, the royal intrigue of “Mary Queen of Scots”, or the heroic journey of “The Outlaw King”, each film deepens my connection to Scotland and intensifies my excitement for the journey ahead.

“I've come to believe that there exists in the universe something I call "The Physics of The Quest" — a force of nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity or momentum. And the rule of Quest Physics maybe goes like this: "If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself... then truth will not be withheld from you." Or so I've come to believe.”
