Anticipating Inverness: A Highland Adventure Awaits

by Bronwyn

As I eagerly count down the days to my upcoming travels, my excitement is reaching new heights. One of my first destinations after Edinburgh, which I will be exploring with Jacqui, is the charming city of Inverness. Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, Inverness promises a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural experiences. From legendary lochs to ancient battlefields, I can’t wait to delve into all that this captivating area has to offer. Here’s a glimpse into my plans and the incredible sights I’m looking forward to seeing.

Discovering Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

No trip to Inverness would be complete without a visit to the iconic Loch Ness. Known worldwide for its legendary monster, this deep, mysterious loch is surrounded by stunning scenery that’s sure to take my breath away. I’m really looking forward to visiting Urquhart Castle, which is situated on the shores of Loch Ness. This historic ruin has a turbulent past and offers picturesque views, making it a definite highlight of my trip. I can already imagine exploring the ancient stone walls, immersing myself in its history, and perhaps even catching a glimpse of Nessie!

Walking Through History at Culloden

Next on my list is a visit to the Culloden Battlefield. This historic site marks the location of the last major battle fought on British soil, where the Jacobite forces were defeated in 1746. I am anticipating a profound and moving experience as I walk through the battlefield, visit the memorial, and explore the interactive exhibits at the visitor center. Understanding the significance of Culloden in Scottish history will add a deep, reflective layer to my journey.

Inverness Cathedral, also known as St. Andrew’s Cathedral, is a must-see destination. This Gothic Revival building, with its beautiful stained glass windows and serene atmosphere, offers a moment of tranquility during my adventures. I am excited to admire the architectural beauty, attend a service, or simply enjoy a peaceful walk around the cathedral grounds.

A Book Lover’s Haven at Leakey’s Bookshop

As a book lover, I am excited to visit Leakey’s Bookshop, which is the largest second-hand bookshop in Scotland. It is located in an old Gaelic church and is filled with books, maps, and prints. I can’t wait to spend hours browsing through the shelves of literary treasures, surrounded by the smell of old books and the warmth of a roaring log fire.

Delving Into Scottish Heritage at the Kiltmaker Visitor Centre

A visit to the Scottish Kiltmaker Visitor Centre will offer me a fascinating insight into Scotland’s national dress.I’m looking forward to learning about the history and craftsmanship of kilt making, seeing traditional kilts being made, and perhaps even trying one on myself. I hope to find some McKay/Mackay Tartan. This immersive experience will deepen my appreciation of my Scottish heritage.

Savoring the Local Flavor at The Malt Room

Of course, no trip to Inverness would be complete without indulging in some local whisky. The Malt Room is a cozy whisky bar located in the heart of the city. It is the perfect place to unwind by sampling a variety of single malts, learning about the different whisky regions, and savoring the unique flavors that each glass offers. I am looking forward to this experience after a day of exploring. I’m also hopeful that I will be able to find something special for Nick. … hmmmm.
